If you are having trouble creating a realistic budget, managing debt, or getting out of debt, the first step is to contact an approved credit counseling agency. However, it is extremely important that you know what to look for in a credit counseling agency before choosing one. This video will help you identity all of the characteristics you should look for in a credit counseling agency based on personal recommendations from certified credit advisors and debt experts at ACCC and guidelines presented by the Federal Trade Commission. Some basic things to look for are that the agency is a nonprofit organization, has been in business for at least seven years, and is licensed in your state. Additional qualities to look for are outlined in the video. Most importantly, it’s up to the consumer to do some good research and make sure they know who they are dealing with before they select a credit counseling agency to help them get out of debt.
Robert Mail: Credit counseling agency should be a non-profit organization, they should be in business for at least seven years and licensed in your state. It should charge no minimum fees and be prepared to waive your fees if you simply cannot afford to pay them. All the counselors should be certified and they should be a member of one or two organizations, either NFCC or AICCCA. For further information about working with consumer credit counseling agencies you can go onto consumercredit.com or the federal trades commission website ftc.gov.
David Iavarone: Most importantly it’s up to the consumer to do some good research and make sure they know who they are dealing with before they select a credit counseling agency. If an agency is suggesting a fee for their counseling, I would really suggest looking elsewhere for services.
