Boston, MA – May 29, 2019

How to Get the Best Vacation DealsSummer is almost here, which means consumers are starting to make their travel plans. Travel expenses can add up very quickly, but with the right research and planning, consumers don’t have to break the bank. To help, national nonprofit American Consumer Credit Counseling (ACCC), provides consumers with five tips on getting the best deal on their vacations.

“Vacations can be costly, but fortunately there are a variety of ways to enjoy a family trip without falling into debt,” said Steve Trumble, President, and CEO of American Consumer Credit Counseling. “It is important to plan and do all the necessary research to ensure you are getting the best bang for your buck. There are always ways to get deals when planning a vacation.”

According to a survey by Bankrate, 52 percent of Americans are planning on taking a vacation this summer, followed by 26 percent who are not planning to travel, and 22 percent who are still undecided. Consumers who are going on summer vacation expect to spend an average of $1,979 on travel expenses. Sixty percent of those not going on vacation say it is because they can’t afford it.

ACCC helps consumers get the best deal on their vacations this summer.

  1. Set flight alerts – Consumers who know their destination and the dates they are looking to travel should set alerts on flights, so they are notified when the price increases or decreases to ensure they are getting the best value.
  2. Book roundtrip – More often than not, buying round trip tickets out of the same airports is the most cost-effective option.
  3. Compare websites – Start the search by looking at websites such as Kayak or Expedia to see the hotel and flight deals that are offered. Then go to the individual websites of the hotel and airline, as there may be a better pricing option, especially if there are promotion codes.
  4. Rent a home or apartment – Consumers who are traveling with a group of people should consider renting a home or apartment through sites such as Airbnb or VRBO rather than booking multiple hotel rooms.
  5. Book with cashback websites – Use cashback websites, such as Rakuten, to book flights and hotels and receive anywhere from one to 15 percent cash back.
